Cave Fruit Bat, Peka Tree, and Architect: How was science theory connects with the concept of Architect Expo 2022?
What is the reason for the existence of plant and insect species, as well as other organisms? Is it only through competition and persecution that the creatures survive? The relationship between living things in an ecosystem is more than just competitive; on the other hand, competition is just one of many types of relationships among organisms that allow creatures to coexist in an ecosystem in equilibrium. “Mutualism” is one of the most important relationships that not only allows creatures to exist, but also fosters evolution between the two beings involved. This is consistent with the concept of Architect Expo 2022, which aims to transform the image of the exposition format in new and unexpected ways.
Win-Win Relationship
Mutualism is one of the relationships that exist between coexisting species. That relationship is advantageous to both of them. It can be written as a symbol (+/+), just as Protocooperation can be written as a symbol (+/-).Mutualism, on the other hand, is a long-term relationship in which one person is completely reliant on another. Fungi, for example, provide algae with moisture and minerals, while algae provide fungi with food. This is in contrast to protocooperation, in which both parties can live independently and even in isolation, such as bees that pollinate flowers and the flowers produce nectar for the bees to feed on.
Gradually evolving certain characteristics for mutual benefits
These relationships are not instantaneous, but have gradually evolved over time through a process known as “Co-evolution.”
Peka is a plant that cannot pollinate itself. It has evolved to the point where only cave fruit bats are allowed to pollinate. Because Peka’s petals and peduncles are strong but flexible, bats can stick firmly, allowing the flowers to curve to support the weight and pour the nectar trapped at the flower’s base to be eaten. Unlike other bats, cave fruit bats have a balanced weight that allows them to precisely receive nectar from the curved Peka flowers and consume nectar most conveniently.
The relationship between a Peka tree and a cave fruit bat is an example of natural co-evolution, in which both species modify their shape and behaviours to fit each other in order to survive. Other co-evolutions that result in mutualism relationships include those between plants and insects, plants and animals, or two different animals, and so on.
A platform where participants can distribute knowledge and update technology trends
Collaboration or mutualism could be one of the most important factors sustaining all life on Earth. Furthermore, mutualism may be the driving force behind the creation of new and different things in the world for the long-term mutual benefit of the two parties, such as the collaboration between architects and other creators from diverse fields such as landscape architects, artists, lighting designers, fashion designers, or even doctors, chefs, or monks, which results in a new perspective of architecture. It is comparable to the emergence and advancement of existing plant species as a result of insect pollination. This could be caused by feeding the bees nectar.
The concept of “CO-WITH CREATORS” will be the heart of Architect Expo 2022 as the exposition’s theme, allowing participants to share knowledge and update technology trends on how this concept can be applied to the creative design workflow. Besides, the concept of “CO – WITH CREATORS” was used as the main elements of this years’ exposition workflow. This includes the collaboration between the three organizing chairmen from three different regions, the creation of outstanding Key Visual that go beyond the previous architectural limits by the collaboration between DUCTSTORE – the design GURU and BENZILLA – a renowned street artist, the Thematic Pavilion which will be presenting suppliers’ innovative materials through the creative ideas of young designers and the collaboration of the other twelves partners between architects and creators from various professional fields in the area of the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA).
Apart from those, there are a number of construction technologies and building materials as well as other interesting related-activities waiting for you to experience at Architect Expo 2022, the 34th ASEAN’s Largest Building Technology Exposition during 26th April – 1st May, 2022 at Challenger Hall, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani.
